Was he in a pickle or a jam? Deano looked at both jars on the kitchen counter. He'd started pickling stuff this summer just to cut back on wasting veg. Now there were all these blueberries and he didn't know if he could start a jam jar or not.
"You know, you want to," Caitlin made a silly scowl and walked away with the baby straddling her hip.
Deano remained even-lipped. He knew he wasn't perfect. How could he have done this to poor little Sammie? Getting her stuck with all those babies at Megan and Cory's. He knew she was an artist.
He really felt like slapping himself. Of course, Caitlin was indifferent about the matter. She didn't care.
"You should care!" He practically blasted the airwaves there in the kitchen alone with the pickled carrots, onions, and peppers along with the plastic basket of blueberries too.
Caitlin returned alone. She'd put Hannah down for a nap. Finally, she rescued him with a back hug.
"You know I can't cook anything," she mumbled into his back.
He sighed. Yes, he needed a hug, but then what else?
"Remember those blondies you liked so much back in May?" He turned to her and she looked up at him blankly as if he might be talking about porn.
"Oh.." then she laughed and added. "The porn food."
"Stop saying that," but he laughed too. "I know you get so upset when I make them all the time, and then it got so hot." He shrugged, thinking it was time to whip up a batch. He washed the blueberries at the kitchen sink.
"I'll use blueberries instead of the Halloween candy, this time." He went to get an egg and the butter.
"Sounds good," she was almost smiling. He knew she wouldn't believe him until the block of blondies were in front of her.
"And I'll make some for Sammie and Gabe too," he informed her they were going to visit them today.
"What?" She winced hard as if to say NO WAY.
"She's sort of your sister, you know." Deano knew nothing had changed with Caitlin. Except she didn't have Pan to rely on at work anymore with the Wade mystery. It felt bad not being on her side about this, but he just wanted to be at peace with his family.
"All right, we'll give some extra cookie bars to Sammie so she can give them to Pan." Deano knew Caitlin would agree to that. However, he knew they'd never be that close to Pan and his girlfriend. He couldn't see that happening.
pozdrawiam serdecznie :)
ReplyDeleteI like how you play with words and their meanings.
ReplyDeleteA pickle or a jam.
Nice chapter.
I'm for pickle and jam, but not when it comes to blueberries. Blueberries are superfood, and I'll eat them fresh and raw.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, nice of Deano to prepare the jars and plan to give some to others too (Sammie and Gabe).
interesting....
ReplyDeletesmooth plot from beginning.
❤❤❤
ReplyDelete"Bite me" :):)
ReplyDelete"don't go breaking my heart" I'll be singing some Elton John now today
Nice that they're going to visit Sammie. I hope we get that story. And maybe time will tell with Pan too.
Nice to see the too again. Love blueberies!!!
Genial fragmento . Ojala las cosas mejoren. Me dio ganas de galletas. Te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteBeginnings don't come much better than this:
ReplyDelete"Was he in a pickle or a jam? Deano looked at both jars on the kitchen counter. He'd started pickling stuff this summer just to cut back on wasting veg. Now there were all these blueberries and he didn't know if he could start a jam jar or not."
You know I love a pun! And I also love that Deano and Caitlin seem to be in a better place. Even if, as always, it's Deano trying to keep the peace. On another note, I almost forgot about Wade . . .
