"Would it be so bad if we got married in Florida?" Tristan's question stung Nic deep. He didn't know how to come back with a good answer. It sounded like jumping off a cliff in his book. Sure, he liked being with Felicity. Although, they had not officially moved in together. Of course, just the thought of such a leap made Nic sit down on his bed. At the moment he was alone and Tristan had his attention.
"But..but..you don't even have a marriage license. I mean, you live in Nebraska, not Florida."
Actually, Nic had no idea what you would need to get married. Honestly, he'd never thought about it. Nic didn't know Tristan was this serious about Dale/Delia. Nic pressed his lips tight as he kept listening. Sure, he might be a little late for work, but he needed to be here for his dearest friend.
"What happened? Why do you want to do this?" Nic was trying to be rational. Had Tristan thought this all through? He was just going on a work-related trip to the Everglades. Nic reminded him, "You two don't even have your own place. You'd really want to live with all those people to start your marriage?"
"What?" Suddenly Tristan was tongue-tied. "We..we could just keep doing what..what were doing."
"Of course, you can. You two are fine the way things are. You aren't ready for marriage," Nic said as he drew a breath. Maybe he was talking about himself and not Tristan. He didn't mean to drag his feet about marriage, but he couldn't just marry Felicity at the snap of his fingers. Not yet, anyway.
Oh, this was making Nic a little frantic. What was Tristan's hurry?
"Tell me what it is?" Nic winced hard. It had to be something bothersome. "Is she pregnant?"
"NO!" Tristan wailed back. "Of course, not. We are on the same page about everything..mostly."
"Well, maybe a chapter or two is missing, what's going on?" Now Nic was pacing in his small sterile apartment. He looked around. Honestly, Felicity couldn't have a thing out of place. He swelled a face as if maybe it was just too perfect with Felicity. Of course, they couldn't tell anyone at work they were actually seeing each other. They couldn't even have a proper date.
Tristan sighed so heavily. "It's really nothing."
"It's something all right, just tell me," Nic knew Tristan would feel better if he confided in him.
a chapter or two missing Oh no Nic is wondering about his relationship.
ReplyDeleteInteresting
ReplyDeleteSuch a down to earth and great storyπ
ReplyDeleteNic's genuine concern for his friend was evident in his eyes. He wanted to understand Tristan's motivations, to offer support if needed, but he couldn't do that if Tristan kept deflecting.
ReplyDeleteSometimes you have to confide in someone... then it's easier.
ReplyDeleteto start marriage having own house is compulsory i agree
ReplyDeleteinteresting story ,told so nicely :)
Such a delight to read. The little details really capture the charm.
ReplyDeleteWow, a vacay and impromptu wedding for Tristan and Dale/Delia! At least maybe. Part of me thinks Nic's just projecting his own marriage ambivalence onto Tristan, but part of me thinks Nic's right and Tristan is rushing into this. Either way, I love your book metaphor and the symbolism of Felicity's apartment:
