Sammie knew she couldn't talk to Gabe about Vada and Justin. After all, they hadn't seen them all month. But there was Rico and Carmen. And they'd had a great time going places with them. Even if it was the skating rink or Nebraska Furniture Mart.
"I dunno, she may hate me now," Sammie said to Carmen about Vada while they were out grocery shopping. Carmen didn't drive yet and she still liked to just get out and shop. They'd just been to ROSS and she found a few toys for Kenny that were on the cheap.
"That's such a harsh word," Carmen said she doubted it.
"I know he made them mad ... when ..when Gabe didn't want them at our place for dinner. I don't know what they're doing together now." Sammie felt bad. Yes, maybe Gabe was rude, but sometimes she knew they had to stand up for themselves. Times were tough. Everything was getting so expensive. But their pantry was full for the most part. Of course, she got everything on sale.
"They need to grow up," Carmen shrugged. "I know they both expect a lot. It seems." She winced.
Sammie guessed that was true. She always felt Vada might be too confident for her own good. Everything came so easy for her. She didn't see her struggles.
"Maybe they are learning to cook together," Carmen's smile was open. Sammie almost burst into laughter as she pushed the cart through the fresh fruit isle. "I just can't see it." She talked how she and Gabe both felt Justin was pretty helpless. "I don't think Vada cooks."
"I don't know how you can be friends with her," Carmen found her rather demanding the times she'd been around her. "It was like you were her maid, or something."
Sammie sighed. She didn't want to believe that. "Maybe just her assistant."
Now Carmen almost laughed.
"I'm sure we must be boring to her," Carmen nodded.
"I dunno, she doesn't hang out with the art crowd like she used to. Even that professor guy who I thought she was seeing has been asking about her," Sammie said as she picked up some cherries and grapes that were on sale.
Carmen winced. "Maybe we should stop by Justin's and see if everything is really OK."
"Our luck we'll have to clean the apartment for them," Sammie said.
"We aren't going to do that," Carmen told her. "We aren't bringing food either. They know they still owe you two."
Good

Genial fragmento. Siempre es bueno contar con amigos. Te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteInteresting of they stop by.
ReplyDeleteSammy and Carmen discussing Vada and Justin while shopping. "They need to grow up,"; 'everything comes too easy to them'. I detect a note of envy in this sort of talk.
ReplyDeleteI think returning someone's favour by helping them in chores is decent
ReplyDeleteVery nicely vowen dear Ellie. Your story is fair display of various human emotions and complicated human psyche: )
I enjoyed this exchange between Sammie and Carmen!
ReplyDelete"I don't know how you can be friends with her," Carmen found her rather demanding the times she'd been around her. "It was like you were her maid, or something."

It's funny, but also sad -- sad, but also funny. So, you know, a nice balance and all the more powerful for it. ๐งน๐ข๐๐คฃ
Speaking of sad and funny things, thanks for sharing about your writer's group. I so feel for you with your "stinky" egg salad when no one else brought anything else to eat! ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ฅ You just never know what's going to come of these club meetings. In college I was (briefly) in French Club and brought a bag of pretzels to our Christmas party. Everyone else had brought French things, including a Quiche Lorraine. One girl looked at the pretzels in disgust and asked who brought them. For some reason I admitted it was me! ๐ฅจ๐ฎ๐ฅจ
Perhaps we all have a little envy to deal with about our so called friend. I think Sammie is optimistic while Carmen is still trying to figure out her friendships and how they come about. And I am sure there is still a lot about Vada that neither know. Thanks so much for your comment. Maybe they will come to terms. I still think it is hard for some female friendships. We don't contantly say in a laughing party kind of way. As in all things..we evolve.
