Oh, yesterday came suddenly

"We could have the wedding in the backyard," Cam suggested to Sammie who gave a nod. She was over with Gabe and his mother to discuss the upcoming nuptials.

The young couple got the marriage license. This had been the biggest hiccup for Sammie who had to get consent from Cam since he was her legal guardian now. He could tell she resented the fact that he had to help, but still he was her family and he wanted it to end nicely.

"I wish we could have it on the rooftop at Mel's," Rico chimed in as if it should be much fancier.

Cam gave his son a bitter look. What was Rico trying to say? He went on how there were even weddings at the University park. The prices were reasonable he said. Even so, to rent out the old building by the flower garden would be well over five hundred dollars. It would be free in the backyard.

"It'll be fine here," Sammie and Gabe both said. "We don't need fancy."

Sammie said she liked a potluck. Mario mentioned he'd get a brisket for grilling. It would be a small affair.

"Will you wear white?" Rico wanted to know.

Cam shoved Rico's leg slightly. Rico winced with an ouch.

"She'll wear whatever she wants to wear," Gabe told him.

"She should wear what she wants," Cam agreed.

Rico nodded and simmered down as if he knew he shouldn't have questioned it.

They went on with the arrangements. It would be the weekend. A quiet occasion. Of course, after they left Cam could see how sad Rico was.

"But, you're the best man," Cam shrugged. "Is that the way the best man is supposed to be?"

Rico shook his head, no. "I guess not," he nursed his bottom lip as he looked at the cold cup of coffee he never got to still in front of him. "Maybe I don't want things to change."

"Well, things are always going to change. You finally graduated high school and we know what you're thinking about. You don't want to stay here," Cam looked at Rico a bit sad too. He sighed but reminded him that he knew why he'd come to visit so long ago when Cam was in the hospital with cancer. "I didn't think you'd stay so long. I thought you would have found your way back to Texas, but you didn't."

"Texas? Why are you mentioning Texas?" Rico looked at him then as if he'd always be loyal to him.

"You're my last born, but you are somebody's first born, too," Cam recalled how his mother was happy he was her first, but he knew things had changed after she remarried.

"You don't want me to go back, do you?" Rico winced as if that was a silly question.

"I dunno, don't you wonder what you left behind?" Cam was a little curious. After all, Rico got a phone call from his mother. She'd asked if he gotten his graduation card with the Amazon gift card. "We could go for a visit."

Rico shook his head, no. He was too busy. He'd gotten on to help with showing tours on campus.

Cam smiled. He was sure Rico would find his way. Maybe he'd find his own happiness. He hoped Rico would focus on his education. Although, he was afraid that Vada would have something to do with it.
