It was so unexpected. Sure, the clouds were getting sad and gray, but really, Monica didn't think it would happen. But after classes and the Universtity she got caught in the rain. Not even Randy was prepared, but he arrived a bit late to shelter her from the ice in the rain. They made a run to her car in the parking lot.
Of course, Monica felt her teeth chatter, something that never happened, and a cough came afterward. Randy sighed. He practically pulled her over him so he could get in the driver's seat. They needed to get home.
The rain drenched them even when they got to the park lot near the apartment building. After another dash, they made it in, and he told her to take a warm shower and he'd put on some coffee. So she did as she was told, and Randy went to change.
He would have to tell her she was getting sick, even if he didn't exactly say it, but by the time she came back to the kitchen, he'd already changed and had the coffee ready. Wasn't this the way she liked it? Just the two of them. No interference from Tristan, who wanted to run everything when he was here, but then he had days where he kept to himself in his room.
Randy did like to keep to himself. It was true. She liked to be entertained. Suddenly, she felt it was all so depressing. She winced, staring at her creamed coffee.
"What's the matter?" He stared at her as if he was waiting for an eyeball to fall out of her head. She was sure he'd push it right back in as if it were always normal.
"Oh, it's nothing." She wondered where her life was going. Of course, he'd suggested from time to time to call her friends from school, but it left her with a scowl.
"The rain was a wintry mix." Now he sounded like she might be in an AI chat. She'dd hate to tell him that she'd actually asked AI about him, but it didn't give her the answers she was looking for.
She nodded, and he got out what was left of the Christmas chocolates. He opened one for her and then one for him that he immediately popped in his mouth, as if maybe he was all five after all.
"I just thought-" She started, then realised she was thinking out loud.
"Thought what?"
"I don't know. I keep wondering why I like you so much." She was being honest. "I mean, there were a few guys at school who used to make me smile, and then they just aggravated me. And..and well, I know you think I'm just an aggravation."
She winced in tears. Suddenly, sadness got the best of her. She was getting sick. That had to be it.
"I never said that," Randy shrugged. "It's just I've always had schedules. Even when I started living with Justin we had a schedule. You know, a time to eat, a time for chores, a time for reading, and of course, running." He crossed his arms and looked at her out of the corner of his eye, but he took a sip of coffee. He sat up then and edged a few more chocolates toward her. "Life was full of schedules. And it was hard to get used to changes." He pressed his lips tight as if he didn't know what else there was to say.
Monica unwrapped a chocolate, but wasn't sure she wanted it. She gave it to him, and he ate it. She smiled. She had no idea he'd been waiting this long to eat these chocolates.
"Sometimes, I think, you'll wake up, find something new. And well, you'll leave too." He told her.
"That's not true. You know, I've never met anyone like you."
He made her feel worse, and then he hugged her, and the tears dripped down her face. Yes, this was home now. There was no going back. And just like he said, they both had a lot of studying to do, hoping for a better tomorrow.
