Cori kind of forgot there would be an interview. He sat at the kitchen table and looked around while both Caitlin and Megan eyed him over.
At least there was coffee. He cradled the mug. Although he didn't really drink coffee, he'd give it a try. After all, he was practically exhausted. He hated sleeping in his car. Of course, he knew he should be used to it by now, but he was afraid of everything.
He'd gone days without a shower and spent most of that time at the library when he wasn't working at the pizza place.
Finally, one of the sweet librarians at the library gave him a backpack of clean underwear and hygiene products and he'd washed up at work.
Really, he needed this room. He needed to get away from his old roomies. So he planned to say yes to all their rules.
He squinted listening to Megan go on about food in the fridge.
"I work at a pizza place so usually I eat there," he nodded.
"Can you bring home leftovers?" Caitlin wanted to know as if she could use a slice of pepperoni right now.
Megan looked over at her as if she might actually be a seasoned school teacher.
"Do you have a girlfriend?" Megan asked.
"No." His words were blunt. He didn't think so. He hoped not. He didn't want to tell them she was one of the reasons why he left. He shook his head no, vigorously.
"Welcome to the club," Caitlin pursed her lips.
Megan sighed as if she didn't believe her. She hugged herself hard and swelled a frown.
Cori couldn't help but smile, and pointed to Caitlin, "Are you -" Maybe she was a lesbian. She was ruff around the edges with strange yellow hair and fat-lipped with a ring in her nose.
"If only she was dating a woman she might actually be normal," Megan said out of the blue.
Now he was stumped. Maybe it was a mutual breakup, he then thought, but decided it was safer to stare at his coffee. This was no time to be thinking they were a couple.
"How could you say such shit?" Caitlin looked pissed.
"She likes them beastly," Megan told him.
Cori thought it was funny. Just what kind of men were they? A world cup wrestler?
"It never last," Megan shrugged.
Caitlin only sighed and took a sip of coffee.
"And you?" He wanted to know about Megan. It was as if she might not be of this world. She was like a pixie nerd.
"God no," Megan furrowed her brow. "I have no time to date."
Cori nodded. He guessed Megan and Caitlin weren't best friends, after all.
