I heat up, I can't cool down

When Caitlin texted, asking Melvin to stop by the coffee shop because they needed to talk, Melvin was so elated he thought he might drop to the floor in his tiny office and throw a fit of glee. But he hurried over as fast as he could. She needed him. Finally.

Although, he spotted that fine-looking blonde young man next to her, oh so talkative behind the counter. Melvin didn't realize he might have competition, after all. It kept him straight lipped, even if he donned a black cotton mask.

"I think they're at it again," Caitlin brought him a flat white so they could talk in the corner of the empty dine-in area.

"What?" Melvin winced as if he might be Sherlock and she was Watson on a case of some kind.

Caitlin nodded as if she were a good little girl after all, not meaning to harm his ego. Melvin rested one hand under his chin waiting for last night's tale of Megan and Cori.

"He slept in her room, all night," Caitlin even checked his room. His bed hadn't been slept in. "I heard them too. It was loud. She yelled. I don't think he'd hurt her. Do you?"

"No, I doubt that," Melvin said Cori didn't have a mean bone in his body.

"I didn't think so. I hope not," but she looked torn. "I hope I'm not wrong about him."

"But..but Meggie looks so happy and..and Cori well he's so chipper," Melvin's laugh was light. Oh, he truly loved being this close to Caitlin.

"Don't ever call her Meggie," Caitlin told him. No one is allowed to call her Meggie.

"Fine," he motioned his lips were sealed. He hated to ask why, but he did.

"I dunno for sure, but she said once she was no one's Meggie. No ones." Caitlin filled him.

Melvin nodded, noting to be extra careful around that impish roommate of Caitlin's.

"Well, let's hope she won't hurt Cori," Melvin said he'd hate for Cori to be crushed.

"What?" Now Caitlin looked hurt that Melvin would take up for his friend and not hers. "She'd never."

"Has she had lots of boyfriends?" Melvin wanted to know.

"Not that I know of," Caitlin shrugged.

"Shall we meet up later?" It was true he was letting his slightly fake British accent slip in.

She shrugged as if to be indifferent, but her eyes said yes. At least, he thought they did.
