you just never know

Megan reached for the cheesecake for breakfast, but Cori took it from her.

"I'll make you something good to eat," he didn't want to make her cross, but he thought she might be lactose intolerant.

Actually, it was practically mid-morning. They'd slept in. It was so warm and cozy but he knew they both needed to do things.

"What do you have in mind," She looked sleepy-eyed as she sipped her creamed coffee. Luckily, she'd used a non-dairy creamer. Still, he wished she'd watch her sugar intake, but he wouldn't say it. No one wanted a nag around.

He buttered the skillet and chopped up the green onion, tossing it in first before he stirred the packaged rice for the microwave and the eggs together. Meanwhile, he chopped a little ham and carrots too. Finally, he put the concoction in the skillet to cook.

"I wonder what it was?" Megan looked puzzled.

"What?"

"You know, in your room," she pulled her messy hair from her face while he got the dishes prepared.

"You don't think it was a mouse, do you?" She told him she didn't know of anything like that in the apartment. She'd never seen one here.

He shook his head no, and went to get a scrunchie and put her hair on top of her head where she usually put her ponytail.

She didn't say anything about what he did, but started to eat before he sat down.

"I-" He knew exactly what it was, but he couldn't say it. Not now. Not yet. "I-I just need to get used to the new place."

"Why did you leave the old place?" She looked over at him while she was eating her fried rice.

"Oh, there..there were just too many people," Cori told her he needed space, but then felt weird he'd said it since he wasn't actually giving Megan any space.

Megan only nodded. "There are just some people you can't live with."

He buttered her toast and put strawberry jam on it.

"Then..then there are some people like you who treat me like a princess and I don't even know why," Megan said with a smile.

"So, this happens all the time?" Cori wanted to know.

"Are you kidding me?" She laughed. "Of course not. Of course, there is that certain someone who keeps sending me Amazon gift cards."

"Amazon gift cards?" Cori couldn't help but ask how much was on her gift card balance.

"Oh, I don't know," Megan smiled ever so brightly. "Would you like to go shopping?"

Cori felt thrilled that she would ask. Maybe he would.
