Here we are

Roman guessed he was up for this. He couldn't remember ever going to such a thing. Of course, he might have been outnumbered. No one here looked like him, but it didn't seem to bother Pixie nor Cyrus. Yes, she'd talked him into going.

"He'll know all the answers," she'd whispered to Roman as she got them all dark vanilla brews.

Roman gave her a quick smile and nursed on his beer. Naturally, Cyrus wouldn't touch his. He looked a little nervous as Pixie pushed the bowl of pretzels toward him. Finally, he took one as if he would not be afraid.

"Now let's look at these questions," she said with a smirk.

"Even if we get all the questions right, what do we actually get?" Roman wanted to know.

"A twenty-dollar gift card for here." She looked at him as if he should have guessed.

First, they had to come up with a name for their trio. He'd jotted down The Three Amigos. Of course, Pixie thought it was lame and Cyrus only questioned her about it. "As if it really matters," fretted Roman while he jotted it all down on their sheet.

Naturally, some loud Celtic music began as if it were the start of the meeting of the minds, and the guy who ran it was the owner's son, a nerdy bearded redhead.

Roman sighed. He hoped they didn't do this every week. Naturally, Pix caught his attention as if she might jump on the table to do a little jig for him. Of course, Cyrus looked alarmed, but she soothed him down when she touched the top of his restless curls. She turned to Roman and did the same to him. She was alluring that way. Roman wasn't sure being brainy had anything to do with it.

"All right boys, get  your thinking caps on." Pixie was a one-woman show.

Roman did his best not to laugh. Was she serious? She finished off her beer and ordered another while the fellow was still going on and on about the specials that night along with the history of pub quizzes and the like.

It was giving Roman practically a headache. Would the guy ever shut up?

"Ok, guys.. let's get started," The moderator announced. It was suddenly quiet. Pixie finished off her beer and Cyrus' too. "Which novel from Richard Adams starts with the word 'The primroses were over'?"

  7. This chapter is so entertaining! You really set the scene:

"Naturally, some loud Celtic music began as if it were the start of the meeting of the minds, and the guy who ran it was the owner's son, a nerdy bearded redhead.

Roman sighed. He hoped they didn't do this every week."

Roman is so funny! And I'm interested to see if Cyrus does indeed end up knowing the answers to most of the questions.

Also, thanks for letting me know about The Summer Job by Lizzy Dent. It sounds promising; I added it to my Amazon list. :)
