Why in the world did he take Deano's call? Roman got an earful the first thirty seconds are so. Roman squinted back. What could he say? Naturally, Eddie could see him from the kitchen of his little place. Roman wasn't sure he wanted Eddie to know about Deano yet. Or was it he didn't want Deano knowing about Eddie?
"Calm down, bro."
"Calm down! You don't call. You won't even text back!" Deano yelped as if Roman really did it this time.
"Well, shit..if you want to know..." Roman sighed, he looked back at Eddie, wishing he had someplace to be alone in order to tell Deano everything he wanted to know, evidently. Roman stepped into the bathroom and sat on the toilet seat. "I have met someone."
"Met someone!" Oh, it was thunder in his ear.
"LaLa and I are over." Roman pressed his lips tight. He hated to admit it was nothing like everybody seemed to think it was. It was just something they did to pass the time. Mutual and somewhat depressing. But it had met their needs. Honestly, he never liked her as a real friend. There was a lot she would never tell him.
"Why? What could have possibly gone wrong?" It was as if Deano didn't have a clue. It was as if he was just Deano's Roman and who Deano thought he was.
"Look, it's good. It's all good. You don't have to worry so much, really."
"Oh, I'm worried, all right. What have you done?" Even now, Roman could see those worried eyes of Deano. Honestly, he hadn't meant to hurt him.
"I met someone at the hospital." Roman nodded.
"Hospital? What did you do at the hospital?" Deano wanted to know.
"Well, we had sex, man. What do you think?"
"Where?"
"A bathroom."
"OH MY GOD!" Deano went off on him and Roman couldn't help but laugh. "How could you? Seriously!"
"It was the women's bathroom, if that helps." Roman told him.
"THE WOMEN'S BATHROOM!" Deano was furious.
"It was with a guy." Roman found himself laughing all over. Thinking of how funny it was getting Deano all fretted up.
"Look, you..you can't do that..anymore," Deano informed him. "What if..what if you lose your job?"
Roman sucked in a breath and kept an even smile. Leave it Deano to turn it all around.
What a fun conversation. I loved this chapter. This seems like an interesting question: "Roman wasn't sure he wanted Eddie to know about Deano yet. Or was it he didn't want Deano knowing about Eddie?". It might seem like the same thing, but it really wasn't, is it?

ReplyDeleteIt's so true that we all have these ideas of each other that are sometimes not at all based in reality. Or, at the very least, are colored by our own experiences and expectations. So when Roman thinks that Deano doesn't know him, or wants him to be someone else, it sheds a whole new light on their friendship: "It was as if Deano didn't have a clue. It was as if he was just Deano's Roman and who Deano thought he was." So insightful (from airhead Roman; he truly is a man of many layers!) and so well written.
