And the days go by, like a strand in the wind

Vera, better known as Meme (Megan's grandmother) was going to make her move or else. She'd get to the bottom of this baby Cora situation (the child that was left behind at Cori & Megan's wedding by his brother's girlfriend). Oh, Vera spent plenty of time with the toddler. Sometimes, it couldn't help but happen. People were busy working and Vera was home alone. Sure she could pitch in, in a pinch. So she was needed to babysit, ever so often. Not that she'd mention it to Megan while they were off on their honeymoon.

Possibly, Cora didn't like Vera in the beginning either, but they got along pretty well if Meme let her play with the homemade dough and have a sweet treat ever so often. But she could be a handful. Yet, Cora never ran off from Vera, even if she wondered if she'd been too stern with the toddler. But somebody had to let that toddler know who was boss.

After a while, the little one did mind her Ps & Qs.

Still, that wasn't the tip of the iceberg.

Cora spoke of her Nana.

"You have one?" Vera felt enlightened. Cora called Vera, "Meanie." Vera didn't like the name, but oh well, she wanted to know more about Cora's nana. "Do you like your Nana?"

Cora shook her head, no. She held up her little hands like claws and gnashed her teeth. Evidently, her Nana was like a tiger.

"What sort of bad things did she do to you?" Vera wanted to know. Cora only pouted. So Vera promised ice cream if she told her what had happened.

At first, Cora made a sour face and hugged herself. She couldn't say. She didn't want to.

"Fine, no ice cream for you, then." Vera shrugged as if two could play at this game. Funny, Vera had never felt this kind of playfulness for such a long time.

"She's mean." Cora finally admitted. Vera went to get the ice cream. Still, it felt so unclear. "If you want chocolate sauce, you'll have to tell me, everything."

"OK." Cora smiled with her perfectly even teeth. She watched Vera scoop the vanilla ice cream into two small bowls. They would have a party. Vera wanted some too.

"Well?" Vera looked at her.

"Chocolate please." Cora could be the sweetest thing when she had a mind too.

Vera went to get the chocolate sauce from the fridge. Cora giggled ever so happily. Vera was waiting after she unscrewed the lid.

"It's my arm," Cora rubbed her shoulder then. "We went to the doctor. Nana got in trouble."

  1. At first, Cora calling Vera "Meanie" is funny, even typical of toddler behavior. But as Vera gets more of the story out of Cora (with ice cream, of course), it's clear that there's something dark in Cora's history. Yet even after reading the very last lines, I still felt a little stunned: ' "It's my arm," Cora rubbed her shoulder then. "We went to the doctor. Nana got in trouble." ' Oh, boy. Vera's right to try to get to the bottom of this. I always had a feeling that Cora might be there to stay, and now that seems more probable than ever.

Thanks for including my tie-dye in the collage! With those haunting Stevie Nicks lyrics on it, no less. :)
