"Seriously, I'm going to have to stop taking you to the grocery store with me," Chai sighed as he looked in the basket. He didn't need all of this stuff Chewy was putting in the cart. Of course, every time he chunked in another bag of snacks, it made Daisy laugh. He was certain they were both against him.
"Relax, its all on sale. The Super Bowl is coming," Chewy shrugged. He was acting like an idiot. Making faces at Daisy.
"Well, we'd have to go an expensive bar to watch. Who knows, where that might be, and I don't even like football." Chai squinted, and naturally, he thought he might get goosebumps from the cold outside. It was windy and the chill whisked through the market every time someone came in.
They went on their way for the milk and eggs. But someone sternly said Daisy's name. The cart halted, and both Chewy and Chai looked at the old woman who swelled a frown.
"Daisy, you know you don't use disposable diapers anymore." Her fists were on her hips as she looked at the child, who sat up and listened. She was June Lee, Daisy's daycare teacher.
"What?" Chewy snapped. "You've been potty trained all along?" He gave Daisy the evil eye. Of course, she was playing coy.
"No more diapers, for you, young lady," June Lee took the bag of diapers out of the basket.
Really, Chai thought they should be safe instead of sorry, but he didn't say anything.
"You two dads have your hands full. But you just have to lay down the law," June Lee informed them.
Chai wasn't sure what to say.
"Well, we'll do our best," Chewy swung his arm around Chai with a quick smile at the daycare lady. She walked away with the bag of diapers.
"God, you're such a chameleon," Chai fretted. "Why did you do that?"
"Because, it was nice that she said that, don't you think?"
Now Chewy was giving him the eye.
"Nice?" Chai pushed on.
"Well, it's sweet that she thinks Daisy has a real family, isn't it?"
"Yeah, sure, and we didn't even know the kid's potty trained."
Chai scowled. A part of him wasn't sure what he could do for Daisy sometimes, but then Chewy was like taking care of a kid, too. He wasn't always helpful, yet he was the only one there to catch Chai when he couldn't take it anymore.
"Daisy, you heard what your teacher said, didn't you?" Chewy looked at Daisy. "Does Daisy need to go potty?"
"Daisy needs to go potty," the little one said with a pouty nod.
Chai cringed at the thought of taking her to the men's room. Thankfully, there was a family bathroom.
