You think you're so underground

"Maybe, I am the idiot," Jared kept looking at his hands. He felt bad for saying those things about Randy when he wasn't even here to defend himself at Jewel's. Jared winced, thinking he was making a bad impression, but Jewel brought him a slice of pie, anyway. She was craving French Silk Chocolate from Village Inn, but she didn't want to go there so he brought it to her apartment.

True, he was growing restless. He couldn't even drive in this country. He'd taken an Uber to her place. Thankfully, she'd paid for that too. After all, he was just her errand boy. Jared grocery-shopped for her, as well. Which meant showing her everything she might want and sometimes not on his android.

She said he should start a YouTube channel.  He wasn't much good at shopping, actually. So many things he wasn't good when it came to doing. He didn't seem to think he'd have any followers, but she found him very entertaining with his monologues comparing American and British foods.

"What makes you think your brother is so much better than you?" Jewel asked before she took a spoon full of chocolate creamed pie and then gagged.

With that, he'd wait till she came back from the bathroom. He went to get himself a cup of coffee. If there was anything she could do for him, it was her lovely coffee. He never had anything like it back home. With a touch of cream, it was divine.

Jewel came back an apologized about how she just never knew when throwing up was going to happen. She took another bite and was fine this time. She looked to be ravished by hunger.

"Shouldn't you be eating properly?" He squinted thinking she didn't have veg in the crisper. He should have gotten some, but he didn't.

"Oh, now you tell me," she laughed and licked the spoon. "You just don't want to say what it is about Justin."

"Well, me mum does love his dad, to begin with," He'd always known it, but no one seemed to care about that fact. Jared's father was a nobody. It was a silent subject and it still left a lump in his throat. Why did something so petty have to weigh him to the point of drowning in pity.

Maybe he thought his luck had changed when he'd been so long with Lorie, but then it all went sour and here he was, wishing he could be the one stuck in outer space somewhere that no one was troubling themselves to get back to earth.

"You just haven't embraced it yet," she shrugged as she went on with her pie. He took a bite but tasted nothing.

"What is it? I have to embrace?"

Now she thought he was funny. Jared couldn't help but fume. However, he did like doing the little things with her, like laundry and learning to stir-fry.

"Don't you see, your mother sent you here to get to know your brother," Jewel told him.

"Oh, he hates it."

Jared grumbled a scowl.

"No, you hate it."

"But."

Jewel stopped for a moment from the last bits of her chocolate pie, clasped her fingers which she tucked under her chin and closed her eyes as if this was a moment of meditation.

"Let it go," she said.

Still, Jared felt stuck on certain things. His even lip was growing bitter.

"I saw a help wanted sign at Dollar General," she said.

Jared swallowed a breath and then breathed out. He guessed he had to start somewhere.

  4. There are family situations that are sometimes not easy to overcome or accept, but it is important to gain courage and make the best decisions, not only for ourselves, but also for those around us and above all to move forward.
